Alvin Tenpo > Laine's Train Laine's Grocery Store, Alviso, CA It had been raining for the entire week and we break in the weather, so it looked like a good opportunity to visit the sleepy town of Alviso. I've been wanting to shoot Laine's Grocery Store for a while now. It was originally established as Tilden's General Store from 1865 to 1912, then Laine's Grocery Store from 1940 to 1960. During the 1930s it was a saloon and dance hall. Laine's is situated right next to an active rail line. Amtrak's Capital Corridor and the Altamont Commuter Express share the line. I had a Twilight Zone moment while I was shooting Laine's. Off in the distance I could hear what sounded like a scratchy Victrola sounding music. As I was composing a shot, the music kept getting louder and louder. A man riding his bicycle carrying a full load of possessions passed by playing his Victrola sounding music. The act of shooting the abandoned Laine's Grocery Store and the music transported me for a moment back to the 1920s. The man actually stopped, picked up his bike and went to the back of the building. I left it at that.
Alvin Tenpo > Ambient light was provided by a parking lot light. Spot light with red gel to highlight the window. Popped my strobe with blue gel filter on the tree branches and leaves. From experimentation, it seems that a 60 second exposure at f5.6, ISO 200 is about right for ambient light created by a street light.

Alvin Tenpo > Painted the Niles Sign using spot light with a blue gel filter. I processed the raw image twice, once for the sign, then a second time to draw out more exposure to the background, that created the blue glow around the sign. Also increased noise. Then combined the two images, added a layer mask then painted through the layer mask to expose the sign.
Alvin Tenpo > Old barn window. Second attempt at light painting. The exterior was light painted by a friendly assistant, while I popped a flash inside to paint the interior. Red gel filter on a spot light for the exterior. Using my strobe flash off camera with a blue gel filter, I popped multiple flashes to light up the interior.
Alvin Tenpo > Joe's Corner Sign, Niles, Fremont, CA First attempt at light painting. Taken in the early morning. The morning was dark, but there was a lot of ambient light from street lights. I used a portable spot light with a red gel filter and painted the sign. I didn't know what I was doing really, it was more trial and error. I heard that Joe's Corner may be revived in the future as a coffee house.
